Denroy Showcases Innovation at Red Bull Soapbox Race
Denroy took on the iconic Red Bull Soapbox Race at Stormont on Sunday 17th May, unveiling its standout entry, Rainey’s Rocket, in a celebration of creativity, teamwork and engineering innovation.
The project carried special significance for the company, as the build was dedicated to our Chairman the late Dr John Rainey, whose legacy continues to inspire Denroy’s culture of ambition, innovation and excellence. The design itself was inspired by the Build a Plane project; an initiative Dr Rainey was a passionate advocate for and one of the founding members of. More specifically, Rainey’s Rocket was based on the Sherwood Scout aircraft, directly reflecting the engineering ambition and educational purpose behind the original project. The real-life Build a Plane aircraft is expected to take flight at Farnborough later this year, making Denroy’s soapbox entry a timely and meaningful tribute to Dr Rainey’s vision.
From initial concept through to final execution, the soapbox build represented a true cross-functional team effort, combining design, engineering and collaboration across the business. Our apprentices played a central role in bringing the build to life as they built the project entirely from scratch, gaining invaluable, real-world experience and applying their technical skills in a high-profile and creative environment. Their involvement highlights the vital role apprentices play at Denroy, not only as contributors to current projects but as a key investment in the future of the business, ensuring a strong pipeline of skilled, innovative talent.
The project was also strongly supported at leadership level, with CEO Kevin McNamee a staunch advocate of the team entering the race. His backing, including funding the build costs, reinforced Denroy’s commitment to encouraging innovation, team engagement and opportunities that push creative boundaries beyond day-to-day operations.
The team’s four riders: Ivo Pavlovskis, Jamie Harris, Timothy Bell and Jake Graham demonstrated exceptional commitment and enthusiasm, bringing the concept to life as they navigated the Stormont course in challenging weather conditions.
Despite heavy rain on the day, the event drew strong support, with colleagues, supporters and spectators turning out in force to cheer on the team. Their encouragement contributed to the vibrant atmosphere and overall success of the experience.
Denroy Racing’s participation in the Red Bull Soapbox Race highlights the company’s ongoing commitment to innovation, collaboration and engaging initiatives that bring its people together while also honouring the legacy of those who have shaped its journey and investing in the talent that will define its future.
